Anyone live in Vietnam? How far does $20000 go in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam?
I want to take a loooong vacation, like do no work for 6 months. Will this suffice?

I am Vietnamese and I live in Hanoi. I think it's a good deal but it takes a good budget plan so that you can enjoy living, travelling and eating in VN in a western way. You can settle down here finding a good job:P Welcome to Vietnam. Enjoy ur stay

Perhaps get a lonely travel guidebook for Vietnam. I have the the South East Asia on a shoestring book and it says that the budget for 20$ - 35$ dollars a day. Also, you are not backpacking so you're travel costs will be reduced. So on that calculation you could stay for 600 plus days.. But that is assuming you are staying in a relatively economical backpackers. We are backpacking the Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam for two months, and we have planned budgets, travel insurance, and excluding flights its probably going to cost 1500$. Which is really good so I think you can have an awesome time on your budget. Beware though: Vietnam visa's are the hardest to arrange out of all the above places mentioned. So look into it. Maybe perhaps move around a bit more, there are so many awesome things to see there. but im sure you have your reasons for Ho Chi Minh. Enjoy :)

Yes, it will more than suffice for 6 months. But for that duration, you'd be better of renting/leasing an apartment rather than staying at a hotel. Even if you chose to stay at a hotel, you'll be able to find a nice room for $ 30 a day; food and miscllenous will add another $ 30. So you'll spend about $ 11,000 in 6 months on the daily living. You'll have $9,000 left for travel and entertainment. Go and enjoy!

for that much, if you can not co too conservative than it can last you for more than 1 year...with travel to many places too... good luck

With 1000 USD per month you can live almost like a good businessman other there. With 20000 USD you can build a nice house with swimming pool, unfortunately not in Saigon, as the land is too expensive, but out saigon, it is still possible
